Wide Splits Pose (Samakonasana)

Wide Splits Pose

Wide splits is an advanced seated pose in which both legs extend outward to the sides forming a straight horizontal line, requiring significant flexibility across the inner thighs, adductors, and hamstrings. It is rarely accessible without dedicated long-term practice, making it a genuine peak pose for hip-opening journeys. The practitioner begins seated and slowly walks the feet apart, lowering the inner thighs toward the floor while keeping the kneecaps and toes pointing upward.

Cues

  • Keep both kneecaps and toes pointing directly toward the ceiling to protect the knee joints.
  • Press the backs of the thighs evenly into the floor rather than letting one side lead.
  • Engage the core gently to support the lumbar spine and prevent the pelvis from tucking.
  • Use the breath to soften the inner groin with each exhale, never forcing the descent.
