Thunderbolt Pose (Vajrasana)

seated
Thunderbolt Pose

Thunderbolt Pose is a kneeling seated posture that gently compresses the knees and ankles while creating space along the front of the thighs. It is widely used as a comfortable meditation seat and as a digestive aid when held after meals. Kneel with the tops of the feet flat on the mat, lower the hips back onto the heels, and sit upright with the spine tall.

Cues

  • Stack the hips directly over the heels and soften the weight down evenly through both sit bones.
  • Lengthen through the crown of the head while gently drawing the chin parallel to the floor.
  • Rest the backs of your hands on the thighs and relax the shoulders away from the ears.
  • Breathe steadily through the nose, allowing the belly to expand on each inhale.
