Standing Hand to Big Toe Pose (Utthita Hasta Padangushthasana A)

Standing Hand to Big Toe Pose

This single-leg balance strengthens the standing leg while stretching the hamstring and hip of the lifted leg. It challenges proprioception and cultivates focused, steady awareness throughout the whole body. From a standing position, the lifted foot is grasped by the same-side hand as the leg extends forward at hip height or higher.

Cues

  • Root down firmly through all four corners of the standing foot to create a stable foundation.
  • Draw the lower belly in and up to support the spine in a tall, neutral position.
  • Flex the lifted foot strongly and extend through the heel rather than collapsing the knee.
  • Fix your gaze on a still point at eye level to steady the mind and the body.
