Seated Forward Bend IV Pose (Paschimottanasana D)

The fourth variation of the seated forward fold represents the fullest expression in this progressive series, incorporating a deep forward fold with the most demanding hand or wrist-bind, pressing the chest toward the shins and fully lengthening through the hamstrings, calves, and spine. This pose cultivates profound inward awareness and is often practiced in the Ashtanga tradition as the culminating form of the Paschimottanasana sequence. From a long-seated position, both arms wrap past the feet into the deepest available grip while the torso folds completely over the legs.
Cues
- Ground both sitting bones equally so the pelvis stays level and neither hip lifts as you deepen the fold.
- Activate the quadriceps gently by pressing the backs of the knees toward the mat, which encourages the hamstrings to release more fully.
- Let your breath be your guide — only move deeper on an exhale when the body genuinely invites it.
- Relax the muscles of the face and throat completely to signal the nervous system that it is safe to release.
