Sage Gheranda's Pose (Gherandasana)

Sage Gheranda's Pose

Named after the revered sage Gheranda, this extraordinary pose combines a deep prone backbend with an extreme leg-behind-the-head position, requiring exceptional hip mobility, spinal flexibility, and shoulder strength simultaneously. The practitioner lies prone, bends one knee deeply, and draws the foot up and over toward the back of the skull while pressing into the ground with the hands to lift the chest. It is considered one of the most demanding backbend-hip-mobility combinations in the classical Hatha repertoire.

Cues

  • Warm the hips, spine, and shoulders thoroughly before attempting this pose — cold muscles make it both ineffective and risky.
  • Use your hands on the mat to control the depth of the backbend, pressing down to support the spine rather than collapsing into the lumbar.
  • Keep the non-working leg active and grounded, extending through the heel to stabilize the pelvis.
  • Breathe long and slow; any sense of sharp pain in the knees, hips, or lower back is a signal to come out immediately.
