Rooster Pose (Kukkutasana)

Rooster Pose is an advanced arm balance in which the practitioner inserts the arms through Lotus legs and lifts the entire body off the ground, suspended only on the palms. It builds exceptional wrist and forearm strength, deep core stability, and demands the full external hip rotation of Lotus as a prerequisite. Found in traditional Ashtanga and advanced hatha lineages, it is as much a test of patience and progressive preparation as it is a display of physical power.
Cues
- Work the arms through the thighs gradually — forcing the passage risks bruising the skin, so patience is key.
- Root all four knuckles evenly into the floor to distribute weight away from the wrist joints.
- On an inhale, draw the pelvic floor up firmly, then press the palms down to float the hips.
- Keep the shoulders actively pressing away from the ears to protect the wrist and elbow alignment.
