Revolved Bird of Paradise Pose (Parivritta Svarga Dvijasana)

Revolved Bird of Paradise adds a deep spinal twist and an inward rotation of the torso to the standing balance of its counterpart, making it one of the most technically complex postures in a standing sequence. It simultaneously demands a hip bind, single-leg balance, spinal rotation, and hamstring extension, targeting the outer hips, thoracic spine, and entire posterior chain. From a standing position with the leg bound, the practitioner rotates the torso toward the floor, spiraling the chest downward while maintaining a lifted, extended leg.
Cues
- Ground down through the entire sole of the standing foot and micro-bend the standing knee to protect the joint as you rotate.
- Initiate the twist from the mid-back rather than forcing it at the shoulder or neck.
- Keep the bound leg active and engaged — press out through the heel of the raised foot to prevent it from drooping.
- Breathe steadily; the exhale is your invitation to deepen the rotation without muscling into it.
