Little Thunderbolt Pose (Laghu Vajrasana)

backbend
Little Thunderbolt Pose

A kneeling backbend in which the practitioner arches backward from a kneeling position until the crown of the head contacts the floor, forming a dramatic curve through the entire spine and front body. It intensely stretches the quadriceps, hip flexors, and abdominals while demanding significant spinal mobility and leg strength to control the descent and ascent. This pose serves as both a deep heart opener and a preparatory shape for more demanding kneeling and standing backbends.

Cues

  • Squeeze your inner thighs toward each other and press your shins into the mat to create a stable base before you begin to arch back.
  • Lead with your chest lifting upward rather than pushing your hips forward, keeping length through the lumbar spine.
  • Use your quadriceps actively on the way down and especially on the way back up to avoid collapsing into the joints.
  • Take slow, controlled breaths and avoid holding your breath, especially as you lower toward the floor.
