Horse Pose (Vatayanasana)

Horse Pose is a demanding balance posture in which one leg stands firmly on the floor while the other is bound in half-lotus and pressed against the standing thigh, requiring simultaneous hip external rotation, single-leg stability, and focused concentration. It strengthens the standing leg deeply, opens the hip of the bound leg, and cultivates a powerful sense of groundedness and mental steadiness. The pose is entered by first establishing half-lotus with one leg, then lowering to bring the bound foot to rest at the inner thigh of the standing leg and finding vertical balance.
Cues
- Press the sole of your grounded foot evenly into the mat and micro-bend your standing knee to keep it tracking over your second toe.
- Draw the bound knee gently downward to encourage the hip opener without forcing the joint.
- Stack your torso tall over your standing hip and find a drishti — a fixed gaze point — to anchor your balance.
- Breathe steadily and keep your core lightly engaged to prevent the torso from swaying.
