Heron Pose (Kraunchasana)

seated
Heron Pose

Heron Pose is a seated posture that combines the grounded base of one bent leg alongside the body with the strong action of lifting and straightening the other leg toward the face, creating a powerful stretch through the raised hamstring and calf. It builds postural awareness, core stability, and the ability to hinge from the hip with a long spine while holding an active leg extension. From a seated position one leg folds back in a half-hero shape while the other knee is drawn up and then straightened as the torso lifts tall.

Cues

  • Root your sitting bones and draw your lower belly gently inward to create a stable foundation before lifting the leg.
  • Keep your extended leg's foot flexed and energy flowing out through the heel as you straighten the knee fully.
  • Lengthen your spine upright rather than rounding the lower back toward the raised leg — lift the chest to meet the shin.
  • Breathe steadily and allow the hamstring to release progressively with each exhale rather than forcing the leg higher.
