Fire Log Pose (Agnistambhasana)

Fire Log Pose creates an intense opening through the outer hips and deep external rotators by stacking the shins in two parallel horizontal lines, much like logs on a fire. It is an excellent antidote to prolonged sitting and tight piriformis muscles, and it cultivates steady awareness by demanding patience as the hips release over time. The practitioner flexes both feet strongly, aligns each shin parallel to the mat's front edge, and holds an upright spine while gravity gradually deepens the stretch.
Cues
- Flex both feet firmly to protect the knee joints and activate the lower leg muscles throughout the hold.
- Place the top ankle directly over the bottom knee so the shin forms a horizontal line parallel to the mat's edge.
- Sit on a folded blanket if the top knee lifts high above the hip, and never force the knee down with your hand.
- On each inhale, lengthen the spine; on each exhale, hinge gently forward at the hips to deepen the release.
