Extended Standing Hand to Big Toe Pose (Utthita Hasta Padangushthasana B)

In this open-hip balance variation, the practitioner stands on one leg while extending the other leg out to the side, holding the big toe with the same-side hand and stretching the inner thigh and hamstring laterally. It demands both hip abductor strength and adductor flexibility, along with significant ankle and core stability in the standing leg. Practiced regularly, it builds the hip mobility and neuromuscular control that supports more advanced standing balance poses.
Cues
- Ground through the four corners of the standing foot and engage the inner thigh to keep the standing leg stable and strong.
- Hold the big toe with a peace-sign grip and gradually straighten the lifted leg rather than yanking it into position.
- Keep the torso upright and the gaze fixed forward — avoid leaning away from the lifted leg to compensate for tight hips.
- Draw the lifted hip down and away from the ear to level the pelvis and protect the lower back.
