Dragonfly Pose (Maksikanagasana)

A demanding advanced arm balance that combines a lateral flying position with a deep spinal twist and one-legged extension, resembling the sleek hovering of its namesake insect. It demands exceptional wrist loading capacity, oblique and lateral core strength, and the hip mobility to hook and extend the legs in opposing directions. The practitioner enters through a deep revolved low stance, hooks the front knee high on one arm, plants both palms, and extends into a diagonal hover with the torso nearly parallel to the floor.
Cues
- Root every knuckle into the mat and resist the ground as if trying to pull the mat apart to stabilize the wrists.
- Create a firm muscular shelf with the upper arm by bending the elbows to exactly 90 degrees — no deeper.
- Engage the side body and obliques actively rather than relying purely on the arm hook to hold the position.
- Keep the gaze soft and forward; a panicked downward look shifts weight precipitously toward the face.
